Graphic arts, Lettering arts, papermaking and book arts are all part of my world. I am past president of Philadelphia Calligraphers' Society and owner of Letterworks Art Studio where I work and play, gathering knowledge of the crafts and working for clients. On most evenings you will find me teaching and sharing my love of letters, paper and book arts. I hope to blog my journey and share a glimpse with you about my world of art.

The Art Studio of Deptford Winter session classes offered

The Winter Session starts the week of January 3 thru the Week of February 7

The Children’s Afterschool program will run thru June with no breaks-

Monday at the Studio

Calligraphy for beginners 6 to 8 pm $15. Per class $65. For 6 week program resident/ $75 non resident

Learn to create beautiful letters with pen and ink. Modern Script hand will be taught both upper and lowercase. Writing with ink, watercolor. Using various papers to create a beautiful sentiment ready to frame. Most tools and materials are included.

Tuesday at the Studio

Crochet 1 to 3pm Marie Bolopue $10 per class for Deptford residents and $15 for non Deptford residents

Learn to crochet

In this class you will learn the basic crochet stitches. By combining these stitches, you can make many decorative designs and patterns. You will also learn how to read a pattern and how to use the pattern guides. For our first project,

you will need a skein of 4 ply worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver) ..Solid or variegated yarn of your choosing. You’ll need one crochet hook size USA H or USA I (maker Boye or Susan Bates) and a pair of scissors. For each project, I will provide you with the yarn requirement.

Children’s after school program 4 to 5:30 pm $15. Per session or $60. For 6 week program resident/ $75 non Deptford resident

Children will create thru various types of materials and techniques. Building on each technique to create fun and enjoyable art.

Wednesday at the Studio

Jewelry making for beginners 6-8pm $15. Per class $65. For 6 week program resident/ $75 non resident

A beginner’s class we will make paper beads to start our journey creating a necklace and earrings. Scrabble tile and diamond glaze jewelry to create one of a kind unique piece. We will move onto metal dies and cabochons to embed photos or artwork. As we learn about resin casting and then we will create with embossing metals for  personal gifts.

Thursdays at the studio

Adult open studio, 12:30- 2pm

stop in and learn watercolor, colored pencils and various art techniques. $15. Per session or $60. For 6 week program resident/$20 per session or $75 non Deptford resident

Friday at the Studio

6-8pm Watercolors for beginners- winter themed projects we will learn about brushes paper and supplies to start our journey, creating wet on wet, wet on dry blending colors to create a harmonious layout. Mono color theme and so much more!  Watercolor kit will be included.

 $15. Per class $65. For 6 week program resident/ $75 non Deptford resident

New Calligraphy class offered

Modern Copperplate calligraphy will teach you about the tools of calligraphy, basics in practice strokes and technique, as well as cover a full alphabet. If you are just starting out or are looking for hands-on tips and techniques to improve your beginner’s hand, this workshop is for you! We will learn the lowercase and uppercase letters and how to join them to make a beautiful poem.  With the holidays quickly approaching a beautiful envelope and holiday card will be among the projects we will be creating.

 Drawing- using sketching pencils we will explore the various spectrum of drawing pencils and why and how we use them. We will explore tools and materials used with drawing and sketching; the children will be encouraged to experiment using many techniques. We will also be exploring with Charcoal pencil- we will experiment with charcoal drawing and learn about the various tools and techniques. Working in white on black as well as the traditional black on white.

Watercolor for beginners- Exploring the world of everything watercolor. Creating a color chart and learning to blend color to create beautiful art.  We will learn the basics of watercolor, tools, and materials. This set of 6 to 8 classes would cover many techniques using watercolor with a project with each class supporting the technique learned in the session.

Colored pencils and watercolor pencils– learn how to create and get the most out of the tools and materials for colored pencils. Blending and shading along with how to create a dynamic piece of art using colored pencils.

Journals – we will create our own journal from a full sheet of paper 19 x 22.  Creating and surfacing pages with various art materials.  learn to create fun impactful pages with water soluble crayons, gesso, colored pencils. Exploring watercolor and various techniques to create beautiful pages to create whatever our whimsy takes us.  This class will help us to create our holiday art/crafts in the second half of this session.

Holiday gift giving– December 2, 9, 16- no class, Thursday, November 25

 Jewelry, holiday star book, tile art, are among a few of the items for gift giving. In these next few classes, we will concentrate on gift giving for the holidays.

Modern Calligraphy using a dip pen and ink. You will learn the upper- and lower-case letters, writing quotes and poems.  Learn to create flowers with your pen to accent your calligraphy. We will be using inks, watercolor and gouache and various papers to create beautiful works of art.

Watercolor- this is a beginner’s introduction to watercolor to build up our knowledge of the art of watercolor. We will learn about the tools and materials used in watercolor. We will be able to make good decisions.  Each lesson will have a project using the specific technique learned. Wet on wet, wet on dry brushwork and putting it all together. If you have ever wanted to learn about watercolor or want to brush up on your watercolor skills this class is for you.

Bookmaking- a beginners book class, create a beautiful Coptic book, star ornament book- create a book structure ready to hang on your tree, or sit on a desk. Embellish your book with vintage holiday motifs, beads, or personal photos. If you love making books this class is for you. Learn to create these little gems to give as gifts or hang on the tree.

 Tangles – time to decompress just before the holidays. We will be creating beautiful tangles that we can use for making boxes and ornaments and gift tags for the holidays. one class $15.00

Coffee and creative time-

Bring your favorite beverage and your creativity. This is a social time to bounce creative ideas tools and materials. Meet friends and make some new ones.  We may have a small project or craft during this time.

Afternoon session 12:30 – 2pm $7.00 residents/ non residents $10.00

Senior creativity –creativities geared toward helping seniors keep eye hand motor coordination while creating something fun to keep or share with others.

Coloring with Colored pencils ever wanted to learn how to create dramatic pages in those coloring books? We will have all the supplies and materials to create and learn and try different types of colored pencils to create beautiful pages and maybe find some friends along the way!
