(Photo credit: Hope Mead) Dear Reen, As I write this newsletter, I am looking out my window at freshly plowed roads after the overnight snowfall. Looking at the street, it’s as if the snow never existed but my front yard tells a different story: one extolling the hours of unblemished work by nature. In the quiet time between our last exhibition close and today we have been quite busy. This winter, we have not only free workshops but also a date night event and our first ever quilt exhibition by Camden native, Renata Merrill. I am excited about 2022 and hope you will be too. Read on to see the ways that you can engage with our work. Stay warm and be well, Exhibition Reception Born and raised in the City of Camden, Renata Merrill first began quilting ten years ago, under the mentorship of Chrissandra Butler of Lawnside, NJ. Merrill views quilts like adventurous stories found in good books. Her quilted adventures employ non-verbal elements, such as specks of color, geometric shapes, various fabrics, colors, and styles to tell her stories. She seeks for everyone to connect with and enjoy the historical narratives and personal stories captured within the art of quilting. Most of all, Merrill seeks to evoke feelings of comfort and happiness in those who experience her artwork. Her process of quilting from the heart is inspired by her experiences of being a mother, wife, and community leader here in her beloved Camden. The reception for Merrill’s solo show, New Beginnings, will be held Sunday, January 16, 2022 from 3:00 to 5:00. Calligraphy Workshop: 1/9 It has been said that calligraphy is the art of painting words. Come explore this practice in a beginning calligraphy class taught by Maureen Peters, owner of Letterworks Art Studio. This workshop is good for ages 12 and up and is made possible with funding from the Camden County Cultural & Heritage Commission at Camden County College, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
